RUN

Adam Heath

In 2013 I started slimming world and was close to getting to my target of 3 stone. I started to enjoy running but on my own it was hard to motivate myself and became very boring. I drove past a running group every time I went to slimming world. I was nervous but decided to give it a go and turned up. Everyone was so welcoming and I loved the fact that nobody gets left behind. I’ve reached my weight loss target and running is a part of my life. Stokefit has played a massive part in getting me where I am today. I would recommend anyone who wants to become more active to put that nervousness aside and come along. There are people of all abilities running every week. I guarantie you will be hooked after the first week! Thankyou stoke fit

Buxton half marathon

What a day!  Sunday 26th May saw 5 Stoke F.I.T. runners line up amongst 226 other runners to tackle the very hard and hilly Buxton half marathon.  Gregg Boughey, Lucinda Stone, Dave McGuire, Matteo Loforte and myself all met up by race HQ and discussed what we were up against!  Only Gregg and Lucinda had done the race before, so the rest of us were unsure of what was to come and just wanted to get stuck in!  Dave had done the Potter’s Arf twice before joining us at Stoke F.I.T. and had done the much flatter in comparison Stafford half since.  Matt however, had no experience of racing yet!  This was his first half marathon, and what a course to pick as a first!!  They both run so well in training and I’m not sure they even realised what they were capable of, especially Matt Read More…

Hill running – why?

Hill running should be an integral part of every runner’s training program. Training on hills strengthens your legs and ankles and allows you to work on your aerobic, anaerobic and muscular fitness at the same time.

Water & hydration

Water is needed to maintain and regulate a healthy and happy body AND mind.  Best of all it is free(ish).  We are given guidelines of 8 cups of water to drink per day.  This should be increased if you take part in exercise so that essential fluids are replaced and maintained.  Slight dehydration can affect our physical performance in sports by up to 15% and can greatly reduce our mental capacity.  Many primary schools now allow pupils to take water into class with them, and have seen massive improvements in pupil’s alertness and in aptitude & mental learning ability and memory recall.  A good way Read More…

Protein

Protein is the building block of life.  It helps to build muscle and tendons, repair the muscles in need of it and regulate hormones. Meats, white fish, shellfish, eggs, beans and nuts are common examples of foods that contain significant amounts of protein.

It is probably a safe bet, to say Read More…

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide our muscles with fuel and they are our most efficient way of receiving energy. They are mainly divided into two groups: simple carbohydrates, and complex carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates (including fruit and sweets, fizzy drinks and chocolates) are the most basic form of sugar and provide a quick, short energy burst that doesn’t last. They only add extra calories and not many nutrients.

Foods higher in carbohydrates include ones that provide dietary fibre and whole grains as well as those without added sugars. Natural food sources of carbohydrates include grains (rice, cereal); fruits (apples, oranges, bananas); starchy vegetables (peas, potatoes, corn); and dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt). To understand the functioning and role of carbohydrates, it is very important to know its types.

The two vary nutritionally, and are broken down in different ways during digestion. Read More…

Gaze out from the mirror, don’t stare into it.

If you do your research, read 100 books, search 1000 websites, speak to 1,000,000 runners, the theme will be common:that running is a lonely sport, that its the most popular solo sports event since the dawn of time.

What a load of tripe. It is the biggest team event in the world.  Where else do you see 55,000 people tie their laces and all run in the same direction with the same goal? Read More…
